The History Behind the Denver Art Museum

The Denver Art Museum was founded in 1893 as the Denver Artists’ Club. It moved homes quite a lot over the years, from the public library to a portion of the Denver City and County Building. In 1949, the Denver Art Museum found its permanent home and opened its own galleries on 14th Avenue Parkway. In 2006, the museum nearly doubled in size when it opened the Frederic C. Hamilton Building. The entire museum now totals more than 350,000 square feet.

Since its inception over 100 years ago, the museum has been a place for the community to learn about cultures from around the world. Today, it’s one of the largest art museums between Chicago and the West Coast. It also boasts 70,000 works of art divided between 12 permanent collections, ranging from Spanish Colonial to Architecture, Design & Graphics.
